WHAT A WEEKEND - NOW WE HEAD TO FINALS1

WHAT A WEEKEND … NOW WE HEAD TO FINALS!

The final round of the home and away season was finished off in style. We saw some great results, good weather and a crowd of past & current players, life members and supporters from the BMFC football community coming together for a great day. Thank you to the Belconnen Magpies Sports Club for hosting the end of season function which celebrated the 2024 season. Now we head into the finals campaign.

Both the 1st Grade Women and 1st Grade Men had fantastic wins against Eastlake.

The women played some great football and were the stronger team all day. It was a great team effort and they played some excellent passages of play taking the ball cleanly from the backline into the forward line and converting. It was the best way to finish the season and the team looks great going into the finals. The men’s team came out firing with a sneaky 1st goal by Tom Simpson and it didn’t stop there! They led at each break but were pushed in the 2nd quarter and needed to respond - and they did. Accurate kicking, great teamwork and an incredible 3rd quarter set up the win and they can look forward to meeting Eastlake again in the 1st round of the finals.

The 2nd Grade Women’s team started the day off with an excellent 66 point win. A 4 goal final quarter has given the group great momentum as they head into the 1st round of the finals against Tuggeranong. The 2nd Grade Men were up against a strong Eastlake and were challenged all day. Eastlake got a jump on the boys and they had to play catch up footy. A strong final quarter showed just what they are capable of and they will be able to build on this leading in to their 1st final against Queanbeyan.

The Rising Stars Women had a very hard game against the competition leaders Ainslie on Friday night. The girls tried hard but were outplayed and couldn’t match their opposition. The experience of playing finals is the next step in the development of this group and we know they will take this opportunity and do their best. The Rising Stars Men played a tough game against Queanbeyan and had a shock loss. Some straighter kicking may have seen the result go their way, but they will now regroup and head into the finals with a renewed focus.

Player Profiles

SAM ‘GLYDEY’ GLYDE – Some would call Glydey the best dressed in our men’s squad, often turns up to games in a suit! Glydey is pure class on the footy field, tackles and runs hard, kicks the footy with finesse. He had a bit of a mid-season break but we are grateful the Croatian sun didn’t win him over and he has returned home, with a tan, to keep us in the hunt for some finals wins. READ MORE HERE

ZOE ‘ZOBBY’ ALLEN – Zoe was going to take this season off footy but we are so happy she changed her mind! Fierce, strong, athletic and determined, Zobby loves to tackle, throwing herself into contests as hard as she can! Zoe also loves strong mark, leaping in the air at the perfect time. She brings her infectious energy and positivity with her every week, putting a smile on the faces of everyone around her. READ MORE HERE
