HERITAGE ROUND IS HERE

The week and weekend ahead is somewhat different for Club footy. Together with the other premier sides, we celebrate a significant milestone for AFL in Canberra. BMFC will also recognise this by wearing a guernsey designed by the History Committee specifically for this game. The background and concept for the guernsey is described below.

In March 1924 the Canberra Football League was formed to organise the competition amongst teams that were regularly playing each other. Over the past 100 years, the competition has had many different formats and BMFC is proud to be a part of the competition we know today.

This weekend, the 1st Grade Men’s and Women’s teams from all Clubs will play at Manuka oval. Our Men’s and Women’s teams play on Saturday afternoon against Ainslie. The Women’s game starts at 2:15pm and the Men’s game will be played under lights

starting at 4:00pm.

We want to see a big crowd supporting our teams, so lock these times in your calendars NOW!

All other grades will have a bye this weekend and will back the following weekend.

Heritage Guernsey

Belconnen Magpies 1st Grade Men’s and Women’s teams will be wearing a unique guernsey designed by the Club’s History Committee for AFL Canberra’s centenary round on 13 July 2024 at Manuka Oval. The guernsey recognises and celebrates our present and four predecessor clubs (Acton, Turner, Belconnen and West Canberra), with a black background, teal trim and a front V in white, black, navy blue and teal. The back has our 11 premierships cups (10 men’s and 1 women’s) beginning with Acton Football Club winning the inaugural premiership in 1924 up to Belconnen Magpies winning the centenary year premiership in 2023. Acton won 2 premierships, the combined Acton-Queanbeyan won 3 and Belconnen Magpies have won 6. The back also includes four separate logos in the respective colours of our four predecessor clubs, with the Belconnen Magpies logo on the front.

Player Profiles

This week we get to know a little bit more about a couple of legends of the Club who bring experience, wisdom and some pretty handy football skills - James ‘JB’ Bennett and Hannah ‘Wally’ Wallett.

JAMES ‘JB’ BENNETT – Some would call him the King of Kippax, JB definitely bleeds black, white and teal! James is super strong and skillful, always finding a way to get hold of the footy and lift his team. The epitome of old man strength, keeping the young blokes on their toes!

HANNAH ‘WALLY’ WALLETT – Our women’s games record holder, nobody can remember a time when Wally didn’t play for Belconnen! A Giants tragic, Wally is our goalkicking machine and this year has taken on the role of head coach! We are excited about the direction she will take our women’s team.
